The monolith

"Is this edible?" asked the big chimp out loud to the rest of of the group. They were overlooking a tall, rectangular object that was resting on a boulder and had appeared out of nowhere that morning. "It's glowing papa!" cried the smaller chimp. 

This glowing, rectangular object resting in front of the primates would be known by all of us, but not to these archaic beings. It was a smartphone. No one knew how or when it had gotten there, amongst the apes, but it remains there quite tangible to this day. 

Out of answers and sensing no threats, the apes rested their backs against the object. Some others tried to eat it or even lick it but they had realized that the object wasn't edible after all.
