Jack of all trades>>>Master of one

Contrary to popular belief, being a jack of all trades does not mean that you are a pretentious know-it-all, neither does it mean that you only have surface-level information about things that you are passionate about; it is not an insult, nor does it carry negative connotations.

For me, it is something I am aspiring to be as I start my career in PR. Public Relations as a profession requires one to play a myriad of roles- you have to be a content strategist one day, then handle a crisis the next. You must be a skilled communicator the day after, whilst being quick on your feet, and doing it all efficiently. You must look after social media, marketing, video, image editing, copywriting, web design, analytics, events, and the list goes on.

Consequently, I genuinely believe that at this stage, it is imperative to learn everything first and specialize after. Now, imagine if you were a playwright, just starting their career in the theatres. Would it not be great if you also tried directing, helped with the stage, and the set, knew about the fabric used in the costumes, and remembered everyone's lines? Imagine the experience you would have if you carried all this knowledge with you.

Imagine the conversations you could have with people coming from different walks of life; then imagine writing about these experiences and creating art out of it (here, the art being plays). All this and more would not be possible if you had not delved into these various aspects of theatre. The same example can be applied to any field, and it will hold.

Now, I am not necessarily forcing you to do this but I am firmly saying that being skilled in different areas of your field will enhance your overall growth as a person. Knowledge across many spheres can be combined to create a well-rounded individual.

In the end, at the stage in which we are in, it is more important to have a variety of skills as it will broaden your expertise and you will be able to fit in different roles. More so, the power will be in your hands; you would not have to wait to be noticed.
